The ISR Mission Statement: "To prevent drowning and enrich the lives of children by teaching them to swim".

Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) is the product of over 40 years of research and development in the areas of drowning prevention and aquatic survival instruction.

ISR is a truly comprehensive infant swimming education and self-rescue skill instruction method that is well established in the fields of health care, psychology/behavioral sciences, anatomy and physiology.

Since 1966, ISR has safely delivered over 6 million lessons to teach water self-rescue skills to more than 175,000 babies and has educated parents and medical experts nationwide on water safety techniques and proven instruction methods. To date, ISR has 787 documented cases of children using ISR techniques to save themselves from drowning.

The Focus for ISR lessons is SURVIVAL.  Why? Because in the United States drowning is the leading cause of death for infants and young children under the age of 4.  This statistic is alarming, but the good news is...drowning is preventable.  ISR recommends building layers of protection between your child and the water.  These layers are essential because the reality is that most children do not drown because of LACK of supervision, it is a LAPSE in supervision, and it only takes a momentary distraction for a curious toddler to get out of your sight.  Visit our award-winning national website at www.infantswim.com for additional information about ISR, including its history, medical questions, video clips and program information.

ISR lessons ARE:

  • for children between the ages of 6 months and 6 years
  • 5 days a week, Monday through Friday
  • Approximately 10 minutes in length
  • taught at your child's emotional and physical pace, averaging 4-6 weeks in length
  • always gentle and individualized
  • eventually taught with clothing, because it is imperative children know how to make adjustments to their skills when fully clothed
  • always given with safety as the top priority

 ISR lessons ARE NOT:

  • scary (OK, maybe for the parent at first.  But it is your job to present swim lessons in a positive light and be careful not to reinforce any negative behaviors)
  • "the program where children are thrown into the water"  ISR students are never thrown in the water.  No child should ever be thrown in the water and doing so is potentially dangerous.
  • easy.  Learning survival skills can be fun but it also requires work on behalf of the child and parents. ISR parents commit to lessons 5 days a week for 4-6 weeks, adhering to all ISR protocols, paperwork, etc.  BUT...it works and it's worth it!

There are three lines of defense to prevent childhood drowning:

  • Constant supervision in and around the water.
  • Maintaining a safer pool environment.
  • Safe, effective survival swimming instruction for children as young as 6 months old by a qualified Instructor.ns S
