Serving Cocoa, Port St. John and Titusville

My name is Robin Ferrante. My husband and I have lived in Port St. John since 2003. We have two beautiful boys, and found ISR when I became pregnant with our first one. Even before he was born, we had talked about swimming lessons for him and at an early age. It was very important to us that he knew what to do in case he ever fell into a body of water. The chances, we originally thought, were slim but nevertheless both sets of grandparents had a pool and you can never be too careful. I, myself, also wanted him to know how to swim because I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love the water and I wanted to pass that on to my children.

I knew that there was a program available that would start teaching self-rescue lessons at the age of six months, so we did some research. When I came across ISR, the program sounded like exactly what we were looking for. I got online and talked to some parents who had gone through the program, and they all highly recommended it. So as soon as our son turned six-months-old we registered him.

I didn’t know what to expect from lessons, but was soon amazed at what my child could do even before he could walk. He learned how to float and roll onto his back that first year. I brought him back to his instructor the following year so he could learn to swim. It took no time at all for him to realize how much he loved to swim and float. I had a fish on my hands. I still do.

Throughout all of this, I was continually in awe of what every child was capable of. Children of various ages were being taught these self-rescue techniques. I was just amazed at how it became instinctive to roll onto their back when they needed air. In the summer of 2007, after hearing about children drowning, I finally decided it was time to become proactive in the fight to stop this instead of sitting back and just being sad when it happened.

I began training that summer to become a Certified Instructor with ISR. I soon realized that while it was amazing just watching from the sidelines, it was a completely different experience being the one to teach these children. It is rewarding and the sense of pride that I get when I teach a child a new skill is unbelievable. I know this is exactly what I am supposed to be doing.

I've started registering for the 2010 swim season. My season will be starting April 12. My morning hours will be 10:00 to 1:00 and evening hours will be 4:00 to 6:30.
